How to Dress Smart and Stylish for a European Summer

What to Pack and Wear on a European Summer Vacation: A Stylish & Practical Guide

Every time I pack for Europe in the summer, I’m reminded of two things — the weather can be unpredictable, and Europeans have this effortless sense of style that makes me want to up my fashion game—without overpacking. So over the years, I’ve developed a bit of a system for what to bring and wear that keeps me cool, comfortable, and feeling like I actually belong in that charming piazza or sunlit café.

Light Layers

First off, summer in Europe can be hot. That’s why I always aim for light, breathable clothing that I can layer. Think linen tops, cotton sundresses, and a few pairs of comfortable pants or shorts. I’m obsessed with midi dresses because they work just as well for walking tours as they do for a nice dinner out.

Walking Shoes

Shoes are where people always seem to mess up. You need at least one pair of really good walking shoes. I usually bring my white sneakers—they go with almost everything and are way better on your feet than flip-flops when you’re clocking in 20,000 steps a day. I’ll also bring a pair of simple sandals that are comfy enough for walking, but dressy enough for evening. If I’m doing any beach time, I’ll toss in a pair of slides or affordable flip-flops too.

Lightweight Outerwear

One thing I never forget is a lightweight outerwear layer — like a thin cardigan or breathable trench coat. Evenings can cool down, especially in coastal towns, and some religious sites require modest attire.

The Importance of a Hat

If you’re heading to a coastal town in Europe — think Amalfi or the Greek islands — a hat isn’t just a cute accessory, it’s a must-have. The sun can be intense, especially midday, and shade isn’t always easy to find when you’re wandering through cliffside villages or lounging by the water. A wide-brimmed straw hat or a simple bucket hat will keep you cool, protect your face and scalp from sunburn, and honestly, it just makes every outfit feel a little more European chic.

Comfortable Shoes

Breathable ballet flats are one of the smartest shoes you can pack for a European summer trip. They’re lightweight, easy to slip on and off, and dressy enough for evenings out—whether you’re having aperitivo in Rome or catching a flamenco show in Seville. But more importantly, the right pair will keep your feet cool and comfortable while you explore.

Ultimately, I’ve learned that less is more when it comes to packing. If I stick to a cohesive color palette — neutrals with a few statement pieces — I can mix and match easily. I focus on clothes I can wear multiple ways, rather than cramming a separate outfit for every single day. Europe has this way of slowing you down and making you want to sit and savor, so I like to do the same with my packing: be intentional, be stylish, and leave a little space in my suitcase for those local treasures I’ll inevitably bring home.
