Classic Shift Dress

Summer and shift dresses. They are THE perfect match. Easy to style, easy to pack and easy to wear. I talked a little about shift dresses in this post here and thought I would style one for you guys last weekend while we were in Bodega Bay. The best part about shift dresses is that they are super comfortable and perfect for casual summer days. I chose to wear gladiator sandals with this embroidered shift dress because we were walking a lot that day. You could easily pick a fun little wedge to wear with it if you wanted to dress it up.

Since this dress has the gorgeous detailed embroidery on the front with the tassel ties, I went with delicate short layered jewels and a pair of fun hoops.  I didn't pick a longer necklace because I didn't want it interfering with the detail of the dress in the front. Since I chose small delicate necklaces, it was ok to go with a bigger hoop earring.

I've gotten a couple of messages about mixing brown with black and I've said this before; if you think it works, then rock the look. You can definitely mix browns and blacks, just like you can mix silver and gold jewels. Rules smules. I don't believe in them. I wanted to carry this gorgeous Madwell tote all weekend so I chose brown colored sunnies to tie the brown colors together. I think it totally worked.

This embroidered dress also comes in a gorgeous chambray denim style that would also look great with black gladiator sandals. These other shift dresses herehere and here are also perfect looks for a family summer bbq or a fun summer weekend getaway.
Shift dresses are everywhere this season so it's definitely a summer must have piece for your closet.

Everyday Basics

If you know me, you know I have a lot of clothes. Some people think it's way too much, I think it's just perfect. I know it's hard to believe, but even I sometimes wake up and think "I seriously have nothing to wear today". I think that everyone is destined to feel that way sometimes and when I feel that way, I revert to my "go-to" everyday basics. I wrote about my five must-have wardrobe pieces here and fall back on those staple items all the time but wanted to share a couple of other basic pieces that I always have in my closet for those "nothing to wear" days.

I always like to have a classic style dress that you can wear anywhere - to the beach, out wine tasting or to work with a blazer. This white and black embroidered shift dress and this black tassel tee dress are perfect for all of the above.  I tend to stick to neutral colors so that I can dress up the basic piece with a cute colorful or fun accessory like this scarf or this fringe clutch

We've already talked about my love for a cute tee, but having a striped t-shirt like this one is great to have easily on hand because it adds a little bit more of a pattern to an outfit instead of just a plain solid colored tee.

A classic and comfortable pair of denim jeans or denim shorts are also always great to have on hand. The more comfortable and cute, the better, because the more you'll want to wear them. The best part about a staple pair of denim is that you can dress them up or down. This denim/chambray tank is one of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe right now because it matches with everything. You can wear it with denim jeans or shorts, white denim, black pants or a cute flare skirt, the list goes on. It also looks super cute dressed up with these fun patterned sandals (which are on sale for a ridiculous price!). I also currently got this striped cardigan on sale and can't stop wearing it. Especially over the denim/chambray tank, it's a perfect match.

The last two items that I always have easily available and ALWAYS pack when I go on vacation are a good pair of stud earrings and a hat. I love these gold shape studs because they are simple and match with anything you wear. This panama hat is also perfect to always have on hand for those days when doing your hair seems like way too much work.  It's amazing how putting on a cute style hat can make you look SO put together and stylish.

So next time you wake up and think "I have absolutely nothing to wear", throw on some denim, a cute striped tee or chambray tank, a colorful scarf, some gold studs, a cute pair of patterned sandals and a coastal panama hat and you will look SUPER put together in 10 minutes flat. It's that easy!

P.s. Everything mentioned in this post is from Madewell and EVERY ITEM is on SALE. So maybe treat yourself this weekend! Even if it's just with a new hat or a cute pair of gold studs.  You deserve it.

Happy weekend!

Colorful Tie Dye Maxi Dress

When I think of comfy cute, I think of maxi dresses. Good for those days when you don't really want to put together an outfit but you want to look cute and put together. Confusing?! Nah. Maxi dresses are where the "easiness" is at. Especially for the summer time. Throw on a cute maxi and some heels or sandals and you're ready to go. PLUS they are flowy and loose but flattering all at the same time (good for those vacations when you've had too many margaritas and chips & salsa at the pool - no one would EVEN GUESS it if you were wearing a maxi dress)

Ok, how amazing are these earrings?!? Full of color, perfect for summer and add a pop of fun to any outfit. You can also wear them 3 different ways. 3 WAYS. They are pretty much a summer necessity. ESPECIALLY if you are going on a fun tropical vacation. Needed for sure.

Summer Beauty Favorites

During the summer I don't like to wear a lot of makeup. Let's face it, it's too hot. You just sweat it off anyways or jump in a pool and rinse it off. I also don't wear a lot of makeup in the summer because there's just something so amazing about a good tan and how it looks and makes you feel. You don't need makeup, you're tan!

The more simple makeup in the summer, the better and more comfortable you'll feel. Good looking makeup all starts with a good base, aka good skincare. First of all, drinking lots of water will definitely keep the facial skin cells looking fresh and hydrated. I also like using the Arcona Wine Hydrating Mask at least twice a week to keep my skin clear, dewey and hydrated. This mask is a game changer. I also use Lustro Face Oil 3 by Beautycounter on a clean face, right before bed. This oil just soaks in the pores leaving your skin bright and gorgeous in the morning. I also love that this oil is made organically and naturally with the use of essential oils and nothing fake.

As far as my summer makeup routine goes I always start with the Kiehl's BB Cream as my base. This is usually all I use on my face during the summer. It blends perfectly into the skin and gives you SPF 50 coverage. That's pretty amazing. In the winter I use the color "light" and in summer I use "medium". If you want to try it out first, head to Kiehls and ask for a sample. They have the best sample packets! After covering my entire face with the BB cream, I sweep Benefit's Rockateur Blush on my cheek bones. This blush is the perfect mix of a bronzer, highlighter and pink tone all in one. It's perfect for a summer glow.

As far as eyes go, I'm currently obsessed with Smashbox's Pro Matte Eye Palette. It's small, perfect for traveling and has all the simple matte brown tone colors that I love using on my eyes. I like to be light on the eyeshadow and dramatic on the eyelashes. I start with one coat of Urban Decay's Eyelash Primer and then finish with one or two coats (depending on if I'm going out for the night or if it's just during the day) of Marc Jacob's Velvet Noir Mascara. I was sent this mascara to test for free before it came out on the shelves and literally couldn't believe people would spend $26 on mascara. Then I tried it. And kept using it. And it just got better and better. Then I ran out and immediately went and repurchased it. It's an amazing mascara. Worth every penny.

Last but not least, I end with Fresh Sugar Lip Tinted Lip Treatment on my lips. I don't like wearing a heavy or thick lipstick in the summer, so this lightweight, color tinted chapstick-like lip color is perfect. There is even SPF 15 in it, which for me, is a necessity in the summer.  My favorite go-to colors are "Petal" and "Tulip".

Well, there you have it, my simple summer makeup routine. Easy, lightweight and with sun protection. Remember, the lighter and less makeup the better! Happy Friday!

Summer Reads

When I think of summer, I think of laying by the pool and I think BOOKS. I read more in the summer. Period. End of story. I can read by the pool, I can read on flights to and from summer vacations, I can read on the patio at 8pm with a glass of wine because it's still light outside. So many opportunities to read and so many books on my list. I've compiled a list of books that are on my reading list for the summer and thought I'd share them with you!

1.) The Nest - Ok first off, how pretty is this book!? This is an "Instagrammable book" as far as I'm concerned. Mint & gold and recommended by Amy Poehler. Done and done. They say not to judge a book by it's cover, but I'm SO judging. This one is too pretty to be bad right? This is a fictional novel that follows the story of a dysfunctional family named the Plumbs. Looks amazing and I can't wait to dive in.

2.) Me Before You - Ok, I'm sure we've all seen the preview for this tear jerker movie. When I saw the preview, I knew I had to read the book first before I saw the movie. I like doing that sometimes. This is a story about a girl named Louisa who takes a job working for a guy named Will who is wheelchair bound. I'm pretty sure they fall in love and I'm pretty sure I'll be crying at the end of it. (I probably won't be reading this one on an airplane. #sobbingintheair)

3.) What Alice Forgot - I picked up this book because it was recommended to me from a couple of friends. It's about a girl who wakes up with a bump on her head and doesn't remember the past 10 years.  Yes, 10 YEARS. The novel pieces together memories and stories of what actually did happen to Alice. It's funny, romantic and hard to put down.

4.) I'll Have What She's Having - I picked up this book about a year ago and finally decided to give it a try. Talk about FUNNY. This is definitely the perfect book for summer; such a light and laugh out loud read. It's basically about a girl's journey as she tries out all different types of celebrity diets. It's a riot!

5.) Find Your Extraordinary - Ok, OF COURSE this book is on my list. The author Jessica Herrin is the CEO and founder of Stella & Dot and someone I admire greatly. Talk about a girl boss. This book is encouraging, passionate and makes you want to live a happier life & be successful in all that you do. It's such an inspiring book and really leaves you believing that you are capable of anything. If you need some "life encouragement", this is your summer read.

6.) Eight Hundred Grapes - I haven't read this one yet, but any book that takes place in a Sonoma County vineyard and includes wine, I'm all in. The back of the book says that it's a story about "love, marriage, family and wine" - all of my favorite things. Looks like an easy read!

7.) Bread & Wine - (not pictured) Truth be told, I didn't photograph this book because I wasn't really sure if I was going to read it or like it. So much for judging a book by it's cover. I started it and couldn't put it down. I read 100 pages in about 2 hours and still wanted to keep reading. Shauna's book is basically a collection of stories that will make you laugh out loud, cry and feel all the feels all in one sitting. At the end of each story, there is a recipe that had something to do with the story and that time in her life. I loved it. Every word of it. AND the recipes look easy and delicious. Matter of fact, I'm making her risotto tonight. She makes it sound so easy that I couldn't not try it. (f.y.i. This is a religious/Christian book. BUT if your not religious, it's very easy to read around it and still enjoy it thoroughly!)

Well, there you have it! The books I'll be enjoying all summer long! If you have any recommendations for me, please leave me a comment! I would love to hear what you have enjoyed reading over the past couple of months. Happy Tuesday!

Can you believe it's June!? (I feel like I say this every month!) But seriously time is just flying by! The month of May was filled with more dresses, rompers and tanks, and I'm loving every second of it. Summer is here! Here are my top outfits from the month with direct links to items. I was able to find almost every item online except for a couple of pieces (which is HARD you guys) SO enjoy!
